How this works
Print sharpness is measured in dots per inch. The standard for prints viewed close up is 300 DPI, so every 300 pixels becomes one inch of sharp print — a 3600-pixel-wide image prints sharp up to 12 inches wide, and no further.
Cropping changes the answer. Your image almost certainly doesn't match a print ratio exactly, so some of it is trimmed to fit — which is why each ratio above shows a different cropped size and a different set of usable prints.
150 DPI still looks fine on something large, because people stand further back from a 24×36 than they do from a 5×7. That's why the middle band exists rather than a straight pass or fail.
What if my image is too small?
You have three options, in order of honesty. List it at the sizes it actually supports — a small print that looks perfect beats a large one that disappoints. Re-export from your original file at a higher resolution, if you still have it. Or enlarge it with AI upscaling, which genuinely helps when the source is small but sharp.
What no tool can do is recover detail your camera never captured. If the original is out of focus or motion-blurred, enlarging it produces a bigger version of the same blur. Anything that appears to fix that is inventing pixels.
